10.9 Final -ed: Review & Practice

Review & Practice Part 1

This Review and Practice exercise is an opportunity for you to test your understanding of what you have studied in Chapter 10: Final -ed. There are two parts to this exercise: this first part can be scored by the computer; the second part will require you to fill in blanks and, when you click on the "Answers" button, you will receive an answer sheet so you can score what you have done yourself.

An -ed ending that is hard to hear in speech may be easy to forget in writing.

Read the following sentences aloud, noting all words that end in -ed and listening for the ones where the ending is hard to hear. There are two or three -ed words in each sentence. Write them in the space after each sentence, separating them with a comma and space.

1. At the forum, some people claimed that inflation could be reduced by wage and price controls.

2. The most respected researcher insisted that controls would hurt newly hired trainees.

3. Most of the panelists agreed to present their statements in the published report.

4. When the forum ended, the audience applauded for a long time.

5. Someone asked if the discussion might be continued later.

A final -ed marks a regular verb in the simple past tense.

Fill each blank with the simple past tense of the verb designated after the space.

6. Our visitors (to stay) longer than we (to expect).

7. We (to warm) up some leftovers and (to talk) throughout supper.

8. They (to remember) our grown-up kids.

9. We (to enjoy) having a chance to reminisce.

10. I even (to show) them our old pictures.

A final -ed marks the past participle of a regular verb used in a perfect tense.

Fill each blank with has or have plus the past participle of the verb designated after the space.

11. Wanda and Paul (to stop) seeing each other.

12. I (to ask) Wanda what (to happen).

13. Each time she (to shrug) it off.

14. She (to evade) me like this before, too.

15. Usually, though, I (to convince) her to talk.

A final -ed marks the past participle of a regular verb used in the passive voice.

Fill each blank with is or are plus the past participle of the designated verb.

16. Students in this college (to influence) by publicity tricks.

17. I (to surprise) at how easily their opinions change.

20. For instance, a lot of students are voting for the new class schedule just because it (to advertise) so cleverly.

19. But others (to prejudice) against the schedule because they don't like the tune of the advertising jingle.

A final -ed marks the past participle of a regular verb that works as a modifying verbal.

Modify each word that follows a blank by adding the past participle of the designated verb.

21. We call this a (to civilize) world, but it operates on some pretty primitive principles.

22. Physical force is still our most (to trust) form of security.

23. A few people try to direct the future of the whole planet from behind (to close) doors.

24. Some groups are beginning to challenge the old (to accept) ways of doing things.

25. The old (to tire) slogans are being questioned.

Don't add -ed to a verb form that follows the word to.

Each of the sentences below contains an infinitive that is formed incorrectly; it contains an -ed ending. In the space provided write the correct form of the infinitive. Don't forget the "to" part of the infinitive.

Don't add -ed to the first verb that follows one of these auxiliaries: will, shall, can, could, would, should, may, might, must, do, does, did.

Each of the sentences below contains an incorrect -ed ending. In the space provided, write the correct verb string. including the auxiliaries.

31. Every time Wallace warmed up to tell a joke, Frank would nudged him to be quiet.

32. Wallace did not liked feeling that his jokes were censored.
