3 Flavors of Online Courses
Web-Enhanced, Hybrid, and Fully Online

> Web-Enhanced Courses build on the classroom experience through online access to course materials, chat rooms, discussion boards, and audio/video resources.  Capital professors use WebCT Vista in a variety of ways:

  • Leona Pie digitizes journal articles and printed materials used in her Nursing class.  She also places them on reserve in the College Library.

  • Hector Postigo uploads the PowerPoint slide shows he creates for his Biology lectures.  Students review the materials after class and e-mail him any questions or assignments prior to the hands-on laboratory sessions.

  • Instead of a traditional textbook, Jennifer Thomassen and the Communication team created a WebCT Vista course environment that draws on a variety of sources to engage students to think about graphic design and visual communication.

> Hybrid Courses are a 50-50 blend of face-to-face instruction and online activities.  Students come to campus half the normal time and on their own time complete a variety of assignments using the WebCT Vista online classroom.  Hybrid courses are intended for students who are independent learners who appreciate the advantages offered by this mode of instruction.

> Distance Learning Courses (also known as "Fully Online" Courses) use WebCT Vista as virtual classrooms where the entire course is conducted electronically. They're designed for students who like the DL environment, who cannot come to campus, or whose schedules prevent them from taking the on-campus version of a course. Check out the Spring 2007 schedule of DL classes at Capital, in the subject areas of Biology, Business Law, Computer Science, English, History, Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish.
