Ladle Rat Rotten Hut?
This story, believe it or not, is the familiar fable of Little Red Riding Hood. This curious version was written in 1940 by a professor of French named H. L. Chace, who wanted to show his students that intonation that is, the melody of a language is an integral part of its meaning. The words here are fairly common English words, but not the ones you'd expect to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
Try rendering "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut" into comprehensible English. How is this exercise different from the "Jabberwocky" poem that you read in the Fun With Grammar for Chapter 4? Before we offer one translation of this tale, we'd like you to complete a little exercise in sound and meaning. Click here, please.
