EIGHT STEPS
in Capital's Student Learning Assessment Cycle

- Reflect on learning styles, classroom activities, grading strategies, pedagogy, changing student needs, etc.
(Classroom teachers, ongoing norm)
- Define program goals, course objectives, & student outcomes, examining how the levels interact.
(Departments, underway)
- Design measures of student outcomes within selected programs, and plan for implementation.
(Assessment team, summer workshops)
- Measure student achievement of key learning outcomes in selected programs, using course-embedded instruments where possible.
(Assessment team and program teachers, fall & winter)
- Collect, sort, analyze, and archive measurement results.
(Assessment team, fall & winter)
- Report measurement results to relevant departments, programs, and committees, suggesting interpretations.
(Assessment team, late spring)
- Adjust all the above steps in response to report, using measurement data to guide appropriate changes.
(Programs & departments, subsequent year)
- Plan ongoing assessments of one or two program goals each year, incorporating above activities.
(Programs & departments, nascent norm)
