A Capital Student Success Story!

Jeffery Holmes

A. S. Computer Science, Capital Community College
B. S. Psychology, University of Hartford
M. S. Organizational Psychology, University of Hartford

In his own words: Attending Capital Community College was very special to me; it came at a point in my life when I needed a change. Being the youngest of three boys raised by a single mom it was pretty tough – we had to work to make ends meet. When I was in high school I worked to help my mom, and after I finished high school, I went to work full time.

When I decided it was time to go back to school, I checked out a few colleges. I was afraid: I would be the first of my siblings to attend college, so there was a lot of weight placed on my shoulders to make it through. Frankly, I wasn’t sure that I could make it through. Capital was close, affordable, and the classes were nice-sized. I found myself making many friends, not just other students, but instructors and even staff members – from the business office, the registrar’s…all the way up to the president. I can truly say I have friends all over Capital Community College.

I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges, and learned additional skills in communication, leadership, fellowship, scholarship and service to the community.

Ultimately, I would like to get my doctorate in Psychology and work with inner city youth. If I can reach back and guide some other young people in the same manner I was guided, it will have made my life meaningful.

My mother always encouraged me to do my best, and always encouraged me to strive, but had everyone at Capital Community College not been equally encouraging…had everyone at Capital not been so welcoming… I am not sure I would have achieved this goal. I now feel that I can accomplish just about anything.
